Shrikes, lizards and Lycium intricatum (Solanaceae) fruits: a case of inditrect seed dispersal on an oceanic island (Alegranza, Canary Islands)

Island ecosystemes, often represented by relict fauna and flora, harbour some important examples of herbivory by lizards (e.g. Sadek 1981; Machado 1985; Feller & Drost 1991; Naranjo et al.. 1991; Sáez & Traveset 1995).

L. González helped us with the germination experiment and A. Valido supplied data on fruit traits and criticized the present paper. A Traveset made helpful comments on the manuscript and A. Hernández gave information on tyhe biology of shrikes. A. Lack, Q. O. N. Kay and an anonymous referee provided valuable suggestions that helpeld to improve the manuscript. Part of this research was supported by Dirección General de Universidades e Investigación del Gobierno de Canarias (grant 963/94). Finally we specially thank the Armada Española (Zona Marítima de Canarias) for transporting the researchers and the equipment to Alegranza.
