Steudel (1), we isolated several 23-hydroxy-spirostan sapogenins. In order to synthesize them we prepared the 23-keto derivatives of the acetates of tigogenin and diosgenin following the method described by Barton et al. (2) for the synthesis of 9(11)-dehydro-23-ketogenin acetate from the corresponding 23-desoxy compound. Two of us (R.F. and J.A.S.) thank the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia for a grant "Formación de Personal Investigador".
