Influence of compost addition on the degradation rate of simazine and hexazinone

The effect of compost addition to soil on the behaviour of simazine and hexazinone was studied with two composts obtained from sewage sludge and from urban solid waste. The herbicide degradation rate, together with the herbicide sorption and the microbial biomass, were compared in the different treatments. The study showed that the addition of both composts increased the microbial biomass and the herbicide sorption. However, the effect on degradation rates was different depending on the type of compost added.
