There is a shortage of reliable data in the near coastal zones because of the limited spatiotemporal resolution of remote-sensing satellites and the technical and economic difficulty of establishing conventional oceanographic platforms. The citizenscience project Patí Científic (Ortigosa et al., 2022) arises as an alternative to supply this lack of coastal sampling, engaging citizen in this endeavor. This is an innovative project whose main objective is the monitoring of coastal waters through the adaptation and equipment with low-cost instrumentation of a patí vela, which is a widely used individual rudderless catamaran in Catalonia, turning it into a scientific patí. This study consists of determining the optimal methodology and instrumentation to monitor the spatiotemporal variability of temperature and salinity, in particular related to heavy rain episodes during spring 2022. The approach includes sampling the area in front of Somorrostro’s beach where spillway discharges appears, including six reference stations. After many instrumentation tests, the scientific patí has been equipped with a low-cost temperaturedepth profiler and a CTD-CastAway used as a continuous thermosalinograph along the sailing pathway. Our first results show that high precipitation and moderate winds allow the formation of an extensive plume of brackish waters.
