Cassou, Christophe European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, 7-12 April 2019, Vienna, Austria.-- 1 page The tropical Atlantic variability is governed by two air-sea coupled modes: the Meridional Mode (MM) andthe Equatorial Mode (EM), peaking in boreal spring and summer respectively. Previous studies have proposeda possible connection between them, but without reaching a consensus about its frequency, type and associatedmechanisms. Here, using a set of different observations and reanalyses datasets, we demonstrate that the MM-EM con-nection has suffered inter-decadal changes from 1850 up to the present. Negative correlations are found betweenthe MM and EM during the whole period, suggesting that a positive (negative) phase of the MM will be followedby a negative (positive) EM during summer months. However, the strength of this interaction decays drasticallyduring certain decades. The air-sea processes responsible of this connection along the observational record will beassessed, as well as the role played by the natural variability and global warming in the activation of the MM-EMconnection Peer reviewed 2021-05-19T11:08:25Z 2021-05-19T11:08:25Z 2019-04 comunicación de congreso http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794 Geophysical Research Abstracts 21: EGU2019-14669 (2019) 1607-7962 http://hdl.handle.net/10261/241191 en Publisher's version https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2019/EGU2019-14669.pdf Sí open European Geosciences Union
