In birds, the bill is one of the structures that may be most affected by this selective processes because itis a structure directly involved with the acquisition of food. In the present study,we assessed the existence of differences in bill size and shape of four planktivorous Subantarctic seabirds of the order Procellariiformes, which coexist during the breeding season.The main aim isto relate these differences with their trophic ecology and other biological strategies,which help to better understand phenomena such as their resources partitioning, competition and coexistence. We also investigated the existence of sexual dimorphism in the shape and size of the bill. For these purposes, we used both linear measurements for bill size and landmark-based geometric morphometric methods for bill shape. The results showed that P. desolata and H. caerulea differed completely in size and shape from the two diving petrels, which they overlapped in bill shape. These differences may be due to differences in diet or factors such as diving strategy, bird calls or the development of the olfactory system. We also observed the existence of sexual dimorphism in the bill in all four species, both in size and shape, except for P. georgicus (we only found dimorphism in bill size) and P. desolata (only in bill shape). However, we could not directly relate these differences in relation to the natural selection for lack of studies in foraging ecology comparing males and females in these four seabirds.
