Upwelling ecosystems are known to be highly productive systems based on short trophic pathways basically controlled by the distribution of the primary producers and the pelagic herbivores feeding on them. Since phytoplank- tonic algae are bound to follow the displacement of the water parcels in which they live, upwelling ecosystems models require, more than others, a proper treatment of the physical frame of reference. In the more recent work carried out by Walsh and Dugdale (1971), Walsh (1975), Wroblewski (1976), and Cruzado (1976), complex upwelling ecosystems models have incorporated important hydrodynamic components that allow a better understanding of the biological processes.
