Tara Oceans Consortium Roux, Simon ... et al.-- Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) Summer Meeting, 5-10 June 2016, Santa Fe, New Mexico Ocean microbes drive local- and planetary-scale biogeochemical cycling, but do so under constraints imposed by viruses on community composition, biogeochemistry, and host evolutionary trajectories. Due to sampling challenges and few cultivated hosts, genome-level viral diversity remains sporadically represented in databases and understudied in nature. Here we characterize the most abundant and widespread double-stranded DNA viral groups in the oceans using the Global Ocean Viromes dataset (104 viral metagenomes from surface and deep waters collected through the Tara Oceans and Malaspina expeditions). A total of 15,222 epi- and mesopelagic populations were identified, and comprised 867 viral clusters (VCs, ~genus-level groups). Of these, 38 are abundant and associated with dominant microbes, so likely represent the most impactful dsDNA viral groups in the oceans. In addition, the identification of new auxiliary metabolic genes suggest viruses directly influence global sulfur and nitrogen cycling, which expand upon their recognized roles in photosynthesis and carbon metabolism. Together, these data provide the critically-needed organismal catalog and functional context to begin integrating ocean viruses into ecosystem models as key players in nutrient cycling and trophic networks Peer Reviewed 2018-11-09T12:50:22Z 2018-11-09T12:50:22Z 2016-06 2018-11-09T12:50:23Z comunicación de congreso http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794 ASLO 2016 Summer Meeting http://hdl.handle.net/10261/172063 http://www.sgmeet.com/aslo/santafe2016/viewabstract.asp?AbstractID=28030 Sí none Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography |
