Studies aimed at modelling host-population dynamics depend first of all on the proper identification of the parasite populations. The host-parasite system formed by Alexandrium minutum (Dinophyceae) infected by Parvilucifera sinerae (Perkinsozoa) offers an opportunity to advance our knowledge of parasitism in planktonic communities. We studied clonal strains of the parasitoid P. sineraefrom ten different locations along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast in order to characterize their phenotypic and genetic variability at the intra-species level. The results showed that, although we found a genetic homogeneity in the small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) ribosomal RNA genes, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS), there is phenotypic variability of strains, in terms of host invasion, zoospore success, maturation time, and infection rates. Consequently, while ribosomal markers are suitable for the phylogenetic analyses, they do not reflect the observed phenotypic inter-strain variability Peer Reviewed 2014-09-04 2016-01-19T08:59:01Z comunicación de congreso http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794 XVIII Simposio Ibérico de Estudios de Biología Marina.
