Fernand, L. 2nd International Ocean Research Conference, One planet one ocean, 17-21 November 2014, Barcelona, Spain At the end of the 20th century, the international research community recognized the need to coordinate and cooperate to improve prediction of harmful algal blooms (HABs). With this objective, the >Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms> program (GEOHAB, www.geohab.info) was launched in 2000, sponsored by the IOC of UNESCO and SCOR. It focussed on the determination of the ecological and oceanographic mechanisms underlying the population dynamics of key HAB species, integrating biological, chemical, and physical studies, supported by enhanced observation and modelling systems. GEOHAB stimulated several advances through 2013. For instance, the complex interactions between physical and biological processes at fine scales, which favour the occurrence of HABs in thin layers, are now better understood. Also, new conceptual and dynamical models that include microalgae life cycles, ecosystem processes and anthropogenic impacts (including eutrophication), and integrating hydrodynamics are now available. These models are useful tools for prediction and management purposes. There is now a clearer vision of HAB impacts on human health, especially related to benthic harmful taxa, food resources, tourism and coastal ecosystems. GEOHAB has also encouraged the better understanding of the impacts of climate change on the occurrence of HABs. The new challenges for HAB research will be addressed through an emerging program: GlobalHAB. With the same cooperative spirit of its predecessor, the GlobalHAB mission will be to accelerate scientific advances, leading to improved understanding, prediction, and mitigation of HABs, in close collaboration with resource managers and various socio-economic sectors Peer Reviewed 2014-11-21 2015-11-13T09:55:43Z comunicación de congreso http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794 http://hdl.handle.net/10261/124985 http://www.iocunesco-oneplanetoneocean.fnob.org/ Sí none Unesco
