Los Coleópteros acuáticos amenazados (Coleoptera)
[EN] Eighty eight species (plus 3 subspecies) of aquatic Coleoptera have so far been recorded in the Sierra Nevada Nacional Park (SE Iberia), 15 of them Iberian endemics and 4 (two species and two subspecies) exclusively found in the Park. In a recent sampling we collected 49 species of which 7 were Iberian endemics, including Agabus nevadensis Lindbeg, 1939 and Hydroporus sabaudus sierranevadensis Shaverdo, 2004, two of the four exclusive endemics from the study area and considered to be highly threatened in the Iberian Peninsula. The species richness of Sierra Nevada is lower than that of other National Parks and protected areas with a similar surface. Nevertheless, it is very rich in Iberian endemics, and the only Spanish National Park with recognized taxa restricted to the limits of the protected area. The relatively low species richness may be related to the homogeneity of the aquatic ecosystems included in the Park, due to the dominance of a siliceous substrate and the extreme environmental conditions typical of high altitude. These bioclimatic characteristics are singular in a region (SE Iberia) characterized by general lower altitudes and much milder temperatures, and could be an important factor to explain the presence in Sierra Nevada of some exclusive endemics.
