Strengthening National Land Monitoring and Information Systems in Developing Countries - GCP/GLO/802/GER

In the context of the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Parties have agreed to rules and modalities of measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) for developing countries. By measuring national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, mitigation actions and their effects, and regularly reporting such information in national communications and Biennial Update Reports (BURs), countries can greatly contribute to global understanding of climate change. The 22 proposed partner countries have struggled with fulfilling these MRV requirements and were lacking a robust national land monitoring system (NLMS) that facilitated prompt reporting of land use change within the national GHG inventories for UNFCCC. In view of this, the project aimed to directly support the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) reporting process on Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) in 22 developing countries, and to support these countries in the preparation of their national reports to the UNFCCC.
