The Development and Implementation of the New Australian Food Safety Standards
Australia is a federation, and the separate State public health systems in Australia were developed prior to the formation of the federal government in 1901. The federal government steadily increased its power and influence over most areas of human activity in Australia through the course of the 20th century, not least because of the financial powers granted to it as an emergency measure in World War Two. By 2001 the federal government had become the source of funding for most public health acti vities in Australia, but most of the administration of public health activities in Australia continues to be carried out by the six State, two Territory and numerous local government authorities.
