Rehabilitation of the Bog Achternmeer Combined with the Utilization of Peat
The project ‘Rehabilitation of the bog Achternmeer by utilization of the peat’ combines the mining of peat from a bog previously used for agricultural purposes with continuous rewetting and the development of transition bog vegetation. The advantage of the applied excavation method (upper– and subfield process) is that the rewetting of the cutover subfields starts in the first year. The part of the peat profile which is planned to be excavated will be removed with a hydraulic excavator in once do wn to the rewetting horizon. This process will be done in several slots of 5 m to 15 m width in a year. During the following years the rewetted slat will expand continously until the complete field is at the level of the planned watertable.
