A study on the efficient method of removing kudzu vines

Kudzu vines are extremely bad effect for the ecosystems that it has spread vegetatively into adjacent forests and roads, hogging all the sunlight and keeping other species in its shade. The Korea Forest Service estimates the area of kudzu vines to be about 47,000ha in 2019. The aim of this study was to find an efficient method for removing. In this study, we created research plot at three treatment sites : (i) by weeding, (ii) surgical methods(cut below 5cm of root crowns) (iii) cross-section cutting of root crowns. The results of this study showed that the mortality of kudzu vines of surgical method (92%) treatments was higher than that of the weeding (0%) and cross-section cutting (4%). Generally, it is difficult to remove completely that the nodes of the kudzu vine have the ability to root when exposed to soil, further anchoring the vine to the ground. To stop new kudzu vine growth, cut just below the root crown and remove it from the soil. Once established, kudzu is difficult to eliminate or control without repeated management.
