A choice experiment approach to inform the design of a PES for watershed protection in a collective pasture system

This paper proposes to use a choice experiment approach to inform the design of a payment for environmental services (PES) scheme for collective rangeland management. The empirical application is located in the M'goun river basin, in the south-east of Morocco. Individual acceptability of various conservation measures and incentives is analysed. Results show that the combination of collective and individual measures under an individual subscription basis, and technical assistance as in-kind incentive to improve livestock and agricultural production performances, are likely to facilitate the implementation of PES and encourage collective action for the conservation of common-property rangelands.
