Review of an integrated pest management programme for the control of diamondback moth in leafy vegetables: The success story of Singapore

The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmme for diamondback moth in leafy brassica vegetables was implemented in 1994 riding on the back of the successful use of screen netting for the cultivation of leafy vegetables. A combination of physical, biological (using the larval parasite Cotesia plutellae), cultivation and chemical pest management measures were blended together as a control package and introduced to the farmers after research attested to their feasibility. Data collected from a sample of 6 farmers indicated that the IPM programme increased profitability of growers although the initial outlay was high. The financial gains came from reduced pesticide cost and higher crop productivity. The overall success of the IPM programme is evidenced by the disappearance of DBM outbreaks and the low weekly adult DBM counts.
