Development of Corynespora cassiicola and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, leaf fall diseases in rubber plantation in Africa

Hevea leaf fall diseases caused by #Corynespora cassiicola# and #Colletotrichum gloeosporioides# show some symptomatic manifestations with variable importance according to climatic regions in Africa. They cause serious problems to the rubber plantations in Gabon, Cameroon, and have led to the suppression of RRIC 103 in 1989 and RRIC 110 in 1995 in Cote d'Ivoire on IDEFOR/DPL recommendations. During the last years, the sensibility to these pathogens seems to cover a larger number of clones (PB 260, PB28/59 and some of IRCA clones) through endemic or epidemic situations according to climatic conditions. The level of the leaf cuticle establishes the fundamental difference between the two pathogens on the parasitism basis. The greater preoccupant situation of the hevea leaf fall disease in Africa draws the attention of ANRA (Professional Natural Rubber Association in Africa) and has led the elaboration of a research project between three countries (Gabon, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire) for an integrated control of leaf fall diseases.
