Technical Advisory Committee Thirty-Fourth Meeting, 21-30 June 1984: Report of the Meeting
Report of the 34th Meeting of TAC at ILRAD in Nairobi, June 21-30, 1984, Professor Guy Camus presiding. After considering center p&bs for 1985 in working groups, in a subcommittee, and in full session, TAC determined an approved level for each center totaling $197 million gross and a contingency level of $185 million. A substantial part of the meeting was devoted to considering short and long term priorities for the CGIAR system. TAC gave the King Baudouin Award to CIAT for the Dorado bean lines resistant to golden mosaic virus.TAC considered the external program and management reviews (EPR and EMR) of CIAT. It endorsed the EPR and prepared a commentary for transmittal to the CGIAR. TAC concurred with the panel recommendation for a study of future demand for cassava. TAC also approved and prepared a commentary to the CGIAR on the EPR of IFPRI., and reviewed the IFPRI EMR. TAC discussed the EMR of ICARDA. The making of recommendations for implementing the consultant's report on responsibilities for research on rice in Africa, as between IRRI, IITA and WARDA, was postponed to June 1985, because of WARDA's preoccupation with restructuring. Progress by WARDA was considered in the review of its proposals for 1985.Center directors told TAC that they generally supported the aims of the International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources, but formal agreement would require action by their boards. They confirmed their support for the IBPGR, and welcome FAO's assurances that the Commission on Plant Genetic Resources would depend on the Board for scientific leadership.
