More Leader + programmes

A further five Leader+ programmes were approved in February 2002 for a total of Euro 186.5 million. The EU contribution to these programmes is Euro 81.6 million. The emphasis is on adding value to local products, retraining and skills development and, in some areas, the promotion of tourism through the exploitation of natural and cultural heritage. Comment: The components of these rural development programmes, which emphasise the development of local value processing, include co-financing of new investment and special assistance to meet EU hygiene standards. These measures could give EU exporters a competitive edge on third country markets since much of the investment cost associated with increased value added processing will be met from the public purse.
