Animal welfare consultations are launched

The EU began public consultations on animal protection during transportation on November 18th 2002. While these are primarily focussed on internal transportation of animals, in the longer term the debate has implications for trade in animal products. Comment: Suggestions have been made by EU officials in international fora that in due course these EU standards may well be extended to animals slaughtered for export to the EU. These unofficial reports need to be seen in the context of the recent review of the impact of higher EU standards on the competitiveness of EU producers and an analysis of the possible remedial policy measures which could be set in place.
