Cocoa pests and diseases

The history of cocoa production in most regions is one of a valuable crop devastated by diseases and pests. Many crops when planted outside their centre-of-origin remain relatively free of pests and diseases. Cocoa is different: wherever it has been planted it has picked up many destructive, new-encounter pests and diseases which have often been the main factors limiting production.' The above quote was written by P J Keane and appears in his introductory overview to Cocoa pest and disease management in Southeast Asia and Australasia. Each of the 25 chapters of the book is written by a different author or authors. The chapters cover: the origins of cocoa; the diseases and pests encountered in the different geographical areas covered by the book; their biology and control; cocoa breeding and government policy for the development and protection of cocoa.
