Swine fever

Malagasy pig farmers met at the end of January 1999 to discuss possible measures to revive their sector, which has been devastated by the epizootic of swine fever currently ravaging the country and causing losses of Malagasy francs 150 billion (about E23 million). The State does not have the resources to compensate the farmers for slaughtering their livestock, and consumers are steering clear of pork, causing prices to plummet.
