Record harvests in the Sahel region

The total cereal production of the nine countries of CILSS (Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel) is estimated at a record 10.6 million t for 1998, which is 31% higher than in 1997 and 17% above the average of the past five years. A calm and stable pest situation and abundant rains are the main reasons for the good harvests. In addition, the rains regenerated pastures and replenished water reserves. Record crops are reported in Chad, Mali, and Niger. Other countries in the region, including Benin, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Togo, also have prospects of generally good harvests. However, Liberia and Sierra Leone still remain heavily dependent on international food assistance.
