Multipurpose tree and shrub database
The MPTS database is a computer-based information and decision-support system that provides easy access to information on over 1,000 multipurpose tree and shrub (MPTS) species suitable for the tropics and subtropics. It is the result of six years' development and data collection. Using pull-down and pop-up menus the user can quickly retrieve information about individual species. In addition, by selecting site conditions and specifying desirable uses and characteristics, the user can produce lists of candidate species that might suit specific agroforestry and other integrated land-use projects. At the core of the database is a set of 2,400 detailed species descriptions that have been compiled using standard data sheets. The database uses standardized descriptors for each species that include: taxonomic nomenclature and geographic occurrence; biophysical characterization of the site for which a species has been described; phenology and morphology; reproduction techniques; tree manipulation and management; cultivation problems; and observed tree uses and services. The MPTS database has been developed primarily for people who are familiar with woody perennials and their application m integrated land-use systems.
