Animal traction network extended
Draft animals represent an appropriate, affordable and sustainable technology. Cattle donkeys and horses provide smallholder farmers with vital power for cultivation and transport which raises the living standards of rural communities. As a result animal traction technology is now an important area of research and development. The West African Animal Traction Network has been an important agent in the dissemination, collaboration and exchange of information between countries. Now the network has spread its influence by forming the Eastern and Southern African Animal Traction Network which was launched in Harare Zimbabwe, during the Regional Course on the Planning of Integrated Animal Draught Programmes held from 5-13 November 1990. This new network will work to unite researchers, manufacturers, development workers, institutions and the users of animal traction in the region through the increased exchange of information and regional cooperation. Improving the capabilities of those carrying out research development and extension as well as organizing animal traction activities and workshops in the region are further objectives of the network.
