Sustainable farming and the role of farmers' organizations

CTA has contributed towards the production costs of a handbook published by the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) which deals specifically with the role which farmers' organizations can and should play in the development of sustainable agriculture. IFAP strongly supports the call for a approach to rural development programming. This means regarding farmers as the key to finding solutions, respecting farmers' judgements when improving farming systems, and working with farmers and their organizations at every stage. Concerted action is required, not simply to enhance skills but to alter the attitudes of those who work in agricultural development. Occasional contacts with individual farmers are insufficient and the handbook argues that research, extension and rural development services should work far more closely with farmers' organizations than at present. In the few cases where this has happened, results have invariably been successful and sustained. The 62-page handbook, which is also available in French, is intended for farmers' organizations and development decision-makers. It attempts to put forward observations from the farmers' viewpoint and make constructive suggestions for action. IFAP, 21 rue Chaptal 75009 Paris, FRANCE Available from CTA
