New treatment for cocoa disease

A new chemical and injection technique using spring-loaded syringes has been developed in Papua New Guinea to fight blackpod disease and canker in cocoa. Neutralized phosphoric acid fungicide is injected directly into the trunk of infected trees. Trials were conducted by the PNG Cocoa and Coconut Research Institute on 70 hectares of land with differing climatic conditions and management practices. Results showed that there was a 90% reduction in canker incidence. Blackpod losses were reduced by up to 50% and there were significant yield increases of up to 40%. The injection method is not affected by weather conditions and is environmentally safe. Institute of Research Extension & Training in Agriculture (IRETA) USP Alafua, Private Bag, Apia, WESTERN SAMOA
