Intercropping cowpeas with millet
Experiments in Niger conducted by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) have been investigating the feasibility of intercropping millet and cowpea. The objective is to get an optimum yield of millet m addition to cowpea grain and fodder. In traditional systems, the two crops compete for light, nutrients and moisture throughout most of the growth period. This limits yields, particularly when rains stop early. Tests carried out over three years showed that intercropped cowpea and millet yields are partly dependent on cowpea plant type. The results indicated that the cowpea cultivar that was spreading and indeterminate competed least with the millet. Cowpea cultivars that matured in 80-90 days escaped drought and produced satisfactory grain and fodder yields.
