ICRISAT Sahelian centre opens

General Ali Saibou, Niger's head of state, opened the US$250million ICRISAT Sahelian Centre in March 1989. It is a major research complex for the improvement of agriculture in the semi-arid region of West Africa, and covers some 500ha at Sadore, south of Niamey in Niger, on land given by the government of Niger in 1981. It concentrates on the development of improved pearl milIet and groundnut, and on the family systems necessary to sustain these and other crops in the Sahel. Its work is aimed at small farmers who, ICRISAT's director general, L.D.Swindale, said, will remain the major agricultural producers for many decades, and can be depended on to produce the agricultural changes needed if they are provided with improved technologies suited to their conditions. ICRISAT's cooperative research at the Sahelian Centre with other international organizations and universities is in conjunction with national and regional agricultural programmes in Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, and with INRAN (Niger's national agricultural research organization).
