La información de base proviene de las historias de nacimientos investigadas en encuestas de fecundidad de fines de siglo. Se modelan dos componentes: i) la entrada a la maternidad, y ii) la fecundidad de las madres, para así completar la fecundidad trunca de las mujeres que tenían entre 15 y 24 años de edad en el momento de la encuesta. Se concluye que, de acuerdo con los datos, la fecundidad de reemplazo ya es una realidad en la región. En 12 de las 15 ciudades estudiadas, las jóvenes de alrededor de 20 años de edad en el 2000 tendrán una TGF de aproximadamente 2,0 hijos. Sin embargo, en ninguna de estas urbes se avistan fecundidades excesivamente bajas, inferiores a 1,5 hijos.
