En los últimos años ha habido un creciente interés de fortalecer e intensificar la producción local de alimentos. Por lo tanto, hay mucha atención hacia los huertos familiares como estrategia para mejorar la seguridad alimentaria-nutricional. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo documentar el estado del arte de la agrobiodiversidad de los huertos familiares y su relación con la seguridad alimentaria, los medios de vida y la capacidad de respuesta a eventos climáticos extremos en cuatro comunidades de la microcuenca Tzununá, Sololá, Guatemala. La metodología está basada en el análisis de la información descriptiva a través de métodos cualitativos-observacionales colectados en campo a través de encuestas semiestructuradas, observaciones directas, aplicadas aleatoriamente a 90 familias rurales de la etnia Kakchiquel y 24 huertos familiares distribuidos en la microcuenca de Tzununá, Sololá, Guatemala. Los resultados muestran que los huertos familiares fortalecen los medios de vida de las familias en especial el capital humano, social, cultural y natural. Asimismo, los huertos familiares permiten el reconocimiento y rescatan el aporte de las mujeres en la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional y su rol en la conservación de la agrobiodiversidad local. Además 45 especies de plantas fueron identificadas con nueve usos diferentes que son aportes importantes para los medios de vidas locales; siendo los granos básicos, las hortalizas y los frutales los grupos más importantes. Es necesario integrar los huertos familiares en los diferentes programas y proyectos de desarrollo local y realizar innovaciones tecnológicas que hagan posible que el fomento de estos llegue a más familias con limitado acceso al recurso tierra. In recent years there has been a growing interest in strengthening and enhancing local food production. Therefore, there is much attention to home gardens as a strategy to improve food and nutrition security. The present research work aims to i ) a diagnosis of livelihood capitals and rural families regarding home gardens , ii ) describe the benefits of home gardens in supporting families in process of adaptation to climate change, iii ) characterize agroecosystem components of home gardens in rural families , iv ) assess agrobiodiversity in home gardens according to their function in rural families. The methodology is based on the analysis of the descriptive information through collected qualitative, observational methods in field through semi-structured interviews, direct observations, applied randomly to 90 rural families Kakchiquel ethnicity and 24 home gardens distributed in the watershed of Tzununá, Solola, Guatemala. The results show that home gardens strengthen livelihoods of families especially the human, social, cultural and natural capital. Home gardens also allow recognition and rescues the contribution of women to food and nutrition security and its role in the conservation of local agrobiodiversity. In addition 45 species of plants were identified with nine different uses that are important contributions to local media lives, being basic grains, the most important groups vegetables and fruit. Recognizing the value and potential of home gardens is necessary to integrate the different programs and projects of local development and make technological innovations that enable the promotion of home gardens to reach more families with limited access to land.
