En el presente artículo analizamos y discutimos algunos cambios en los paradigmas relacionados con las relaciones entre los bosques, la sociedad y el ambiente. Ofrecemos una visión general de las interrelaciones entre los diversos actores y elementos involucrados como un arquetipo de un sector forestal sostenible. Usando esta visión general de referencia, seleccionamos algunos ejemplos importantes de paradigmas cambiantes. Dichos paradigmas se relacionan con los usuarios y propietarios de los bosques, los recursos forestales, los mercados y aspectos comerciales, las instituciones involucradas, el marco político-legal, y consideraciones sociales y culturales del entorno. El artículo concluye que el manejo sostenible de los recursos forestales requiere un progreso adecuado en todas las dimensiones y condiciones pertinentes.
