Sc) -- CATIE, Turrialba (Costa Rica),2008 El objetivo de la investigación fue contribuir al conocimiento sobre la importancia de las franjas ribereñas como fuentes de generación de servicios ecosistémicos, económicos y sociales. La investigación se realizó en la microcuenca del río Toila, subcuenca del río Matanzas y consistió en el análisis de los siguientes aspectos: marco legal e institucional de las franjas ribereñas, visión institucional y percepción de los productores sobre las franjas ribereñas, capacidad de las franjas ribereñas para disminuir la erosión y la contaminación, evaluación de la calidad ecológica de las riberas, influencia de los usos de la tierra en la calidad del agua y la comparación de las características edáficas y vegetales de los bosques ribereños y adyacentes. Los resultados muestran que existe un régimen jurídico disperso, con enfoque sectorial y carente de una ley específica que oriente la administración y gestión de los recursos naturales a nivel de franjas ribereñas. Sin embargo, existe una percepción favorable de las instituciones y de las comunidades con relación a la importancia de estas áreas. The main objective of this research thesis was to contribute to the knowledge about the role of the riparian vegetation as a source of ecosystemic, economic and social services. The research was done in the Toila river micro-watershed, Matanzas river sub-watershed, Guatemala. The research analyzed the legal and institutional framework concerning the riparian vegetation as well as the stakeholders perception about its usefulness. In addition, a qualitative evaluation of the riparian vegetation was done to determine the rol of such landcover in erosion and pollution control, ecological functionality, and the influence of landuse its relation to the water quality and soil characteristics. The results show that there is a sparse legal system and that there is not an specific law regarding the riparian vegetation and natural resources management.
