Current status and trends of mangroves and seagrasses in Nha Trang bay

Seagrass and mangrove are very important ecosystems along the coastal zones. However, their degradation has been remarkably recorded worldwide. Based on remote sensing analysis and field trips for the mangroves and seagrasses, the results indicate that mangroves in Nha Trang bay were found at Dam Bay (Hon Tre) with area of 3.4 ha, including natural and replanting forests. Nine species of mangroves were identified. Among them, there were seven species of true mangroves. Rhizophora apiculata and Aegiceras floridum were common species. The seagrass beds mainly distributed in the seashore and islands of bay, such as: Hon Chong, Song Lo, Vung Me – Con Se Tre, Dam Gia, Dam Tre, Bai San with total area of about 68 ha. Ten species of seagrass in Nha Trang bay were recorded, of which Halophila ovalis, Halodule pinifolia, Thalassia hemprichii and Enhalus acoroides were common. The seagrass area in Nha Trang bay has been rapidly degraded. We conclude that 28 ha of seagrass beds (29% of total area) have been disappeared due to activities of land reclamation and sea encroachment for building tourism areas from 2002 up to now.
