The impact of different salinity and the manganese ion on the Macoma baltica L
It is assumed that the annual variations in the abundance and distribution of Macoma baltica in the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea) depend on the influence of physical and chemical environmental factors, first of all on the changes in the salinity and temperature regime and the ice cover. Also, the manganese ion with the concentration as high as up to 30-40 mg/l in the solutions of various compounds in the sediments, can affect the life processes of the invertebrates dwelling in or on the bottom. The results of the experimental studies on the influence of water salinity and the concentration of the manganese ion upon the respiration and survival of M. baltica L. are presented. The impact of salinity, the solutions of manganese chloride (MnCl sub(2)) and manganese sulphate (MnSO sub(4)) is also discussed.
