Fisheries and fishery statistical system in Bangladesh

Following a brief account of the structure of the fishery sector in Bangladesh, an outline is given of fishery policy towards 2010. Before 1980, there was no statistical system for fisheries in Bangladesh. In the present system, fishery statistics are collected according to the survey manual. Catch assessment surveys for each of the 3 sectors (open-water, closed-water and marine) are undertaken; each of the surveys is designed as a sample of 1, 2, and 3 stage sampling for estimating total catches on the basis of data of sample units, which are collected by the Fishery Survey Officers. Details are given of proposals to improve the national fisheries statistics system.
