Fisheries Research Institute (FIRI), a "research" arm in the fisheries research, development and management of the fisheries industry

The Fisheries Research Institute (FIRI), formally known as the "Uganda Freshwater Fisheries Research Organisation (UFFRO)" is one ofthe eight research institutes that constitute the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) ofUganda.The Institute is located at the shores of Lake Victoria along Nile Crescent overlookingPilkington Bay in Jinja with its two sub-stations, one at Nakawa, responsible for Post-harvest Fishery Research, and another one at Kajjansi, responsible for the AquaculturelFish fanning Research.The main objective ofFIRI is to promote, co-ordinate and undertake applied research in Fisheries, Fish fanning (Aquaculture), Post-harvest Fisheries and in the Fish production system (the water environment) in order to generate knowledge/information/technologies required for development, conservation and management ofthe water bodies for enhanced and sustainable fish production. This will ensure increased fish food supply for people's consumption, fish raw material forlocalprocessing industries, production for export diversification, raising rural incomes andquality oflife;andtheconservation ofthenaturalquality oflife; andthe conservation ofthe natural resource-base (the water environment) stet for the sustainable development.
