Efforts to incorporate biodiversity concerns in management of the fisheries of the Victoria Lake Basin
Lake Victoria had very high diversity of fish and other aquatic organisms and avaried ecosystem. Diversity of the biotic communities declined and theecosystem deteriorated due to excessive fishing pressure, alien fish stockingsand poor management of the watershed. This affected the diversity of theecosystem, the species and the gene pool. Local, national, regional andinternational actions have and are still being implemented to conserve andenhance species and genetic diversity by: controlling fishing effort; identifyingand protecting endangered species and habitats; mapping and setting upconservation areas; and controlling pollution and eutrophication of the fishhabitat.
