Biomechanics of major ampullate silk from Nephilengys cruentata.

Major ampullate sílk, which serves as the spider's lifeline and structural frame silk for its web, has been the most extensively studied of the spider silks, probably because of its exceptional mechanical properties. the major ampullate fibers of orb weavers are known to have strength on the same order of magnitude as that of the high performance fiber Kevlar but approximately seven times the elasticity.
