Introducción a la optimización de la red de logística en el aceite de palma.

As the palm oil company grows, more and more complexity is introduced to logistics network. This happens in the palm oil business because of its attractiveness to further invest in larger and larger plantation operations and creating vertical integration in the business. With complexity, it brings the danger of over or under spending in facilities resulting to inefficiencies and even losses. The costs incurred in logistics network has becomed significant. The nature of palm oil business demands that focus is on costs rather than price since price is dictated mainly by international supply and demand factors and not mainly by plantation management. This breeds the need for companies to have an optimization tool or technique to reduce cost at the design stage to avoid major errors in facilities location, timing and capacity. This is where Logistics Network Optimization is needed. Logistics Network optimization has 2 objectives, first is to minimize cost if prices are fixed. Secondly to maximize profit if the price differentials between locations and demand variations in these locations are known or predictable. Of those 2 objectives, the deliverable in network, optimization is a build program for expanding and growing the plantation company, the transportation program, the handling and storage program to enable the company to expand in an optimized manner. The optimization itself can be done with a mathematical model using Linear Programming. Linear Programming is mathematical technique to find the most optimized solution when given a problem and many constraints. Therefore, Linear Programming in Logistics Network Optimization is to find a condition where maximum profit or minimum cost can be achieved with the varying constraints of availability, cost, demand, at different time periods. Since all activities are related, then automatically, the cost also related to each other. Cost reduction efforts in a focused area of logistics network do not guarantee that it will result into total network savings. To have a maximum benefit in expanding facilities and plantation assets, logistics network optimization must be considered for total logistics network.
