The oilseed sector in Poland.

Poland produces 31% of the output of the eastern and Central European countries wishing to join the EU. Rape is Poland's principal oilseed crop. Despite poor figures in 1996 it is expected that production could stabilize at 600 000 ha and yields could return to 25 quintals per ha achieved in the past. Despite expected increases in domestic consumption, Poland is likely to remain an exporter of this oil. Oilseed processing plant is concentrated in six companies, three of which are being purchased byoverseas investors. The remainder, which are publicly owned, do not have the necessary investment funds for development. Whilst Poland has the capacity to treat 850 000 tonnes of seed annually, it is likely that raw oil will continue to be imported (soyapalm oil, copra). The success of this sector depends largely on willingness to improve its capacity to handle this crop rather than imported seeds. If this is achieved it will help control the volume of rapeseed exported to EU member countries.
