Results and future prospects of the Cartisol programme : Construction of a genetic map for sunflower and research into molecular markers for disease resistance.

An account is given of the Cartisol research programme, which involved French public research institutions and private seed companies. In the first period (1990-94), an RFLP map of Helianthus annuus was constructed, consisting of 237 loci spread over 23 linkage groups. This enabled the identification of hybrids and breeding lines, and allowed the mapping of 3 genes conferring resistance to downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii). In the second part of the programme (1994-97), quantitative trait loci for resistance to Sclerotinia and Diaporthe helianthi were identified.
