Effect of endosulfan on mycelial growth of pleurotus ostreatus and auricularia fuscosuccinea in liquid culture

In this work, the ability of Pleurotus ostreatus and Auricularia fuscosuccinea to grow in the presence of endosulfan was studied. Three liquid media under agitation were used for each fungus: 1) low carbon (2 g/l), 2) low nitrogen ( 2.4 mM), and 3) abundant carbon and nitrogen (10 g/l and 24 mM respectively). Fungal biomass (0.25 g wet weight) was seeded in 125 ml flasks with 30 ml sterile medium. Incubation lasted for 17 days in the dark at 28ºC with agitation by an orbital shaker at 100 rpm. On the second day of growth, 0.5 ml of an endosulfan solution was added to give a final concentration of 100 parts per million. Biomass production, sugar consumption and endosulfan content in the medium were assayed at 2, 8, 14 and 17 days thereafter. Both fungi were able to grow in the presence of the insecticide, although a decrease in biomass, growth rate and sugar consumption was observed. Except for the case of P. ostreatus in low carbon medium, both fungi were able to degrade 100 ppm endosulfan during a period of eight days of growth.
