Project on Natural Resource Conservation and Management with Community Participation in the Western Up-Lands of the Maribios Mountains, León, Nicaragua; report of consultancy in soil conservation and agroforestry
This consultancy in soil and water conservation and agro-forestry was carried out from 16/9/89 to 20/1/90 with GCP/NIC/019/NET project at Leon, Nicaragua. Practically no soil conservation and agro-forestry program have been carried out, in past, in the up-lands of the Maribios. The project started demonstrations of these works in march 1989 through people's participation. In this report a criterion for general land use planning of the up-lands of Maribios has been developed. The area has sandy/sandy loam soils and has a sub-humid tropical climate. Indicative land use plans of the two most critical watersheds (about 15,800 Ha) have been developed. These plans show that all the areas of up-stream (>200m AMSL) watersheds No. 3 and 4 need soil/water/forest conservation treatments to remain productive in their present land use. A rapid rural appraisal (RRA) of the present socio-economic conditions and traditional farming systems of the area was conducted to adopt appropriate natural resource conservation technology to these realities. A total of about 95 of population was found to be either completly landless (12), sharecroppers (33) or small farmers (49) harving only 1.4-7Ha. land. Minimum technological packages, seperately for share croppers and small farmers were developed. These resource conservation packages consist of alley cropping (class Ib) or hedge rows (class II) knitted by its branches on the base for soil conservation, minimun or reduced tillage by traditional bullock drawn hoe (banca), appropriate crop rotation, control of fertilizer use, cisterns for drinking water, live fences and woodlots for additional fuel wood and simple gulley control works. These techniques have been described in detail as adopted to traditional farming systems. Demonstrations of these practices were carried out and all national counter-parts trained in executing these works. A strategy for people's participation is suggested here. A detailed basis for determining incentives to be given to farmers for up-land development is described in the report. Finally a work cronogram is proposed for the remaining duration of the project and recommendations developed to achieve the project objectives in soil conservation and agro-forestry.
