Effect of caffeine (1,3,7-triemethylxanthina) on the mycelial growth of fungi associated with coffee
The effect of different concentrations (0.5 percent, 0.8 percent, 1.0 percent and 2.0 percent) of caffeine on the mycelial growth of Fusarium sp., Cladosporium cladosporioides, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ochraceus and Aspergillus flavus, associated with green coffee beans was determined. Caffeine entirely inhibited C. cladosporioides in all the tested concentrations. It inhibited Fusarium sp. at 1 percent and 2 percent. The mycelial growth of the other tested moulds was significantly decreased at all concentrations.
