Creation and distribution of a rootstock variety (Coffea canephora) by somatic embryogenesis

Nematodes are a major threat to Arabica in Central America. The creation and distribution of a C. canephora rootstock variety is described. The progenies of the T3561 x T3751 hybrid were selected through numerous resistance tests and make up a new cultivar, Nemaya. This cultivar is resistant to most coffee root nematode species in Central America. Somatic embryogenesis proved to be essential to set up seed gardens of over 25 ha. The two parent trees were successfully propagated in Costa Rica, distributed, and then acclimatized locally. The conditions for using Nemaya are described. This project is the first example of varietal distribution based on somatic embryogenesis.
