The importance of agroforestry systems for coffee production in Central America and Mexico

Agroforestry systems appear to be economically less risky and more sustainable than coffee monocultures. In Central America and Mexico, such systems help to diversify farmers' sources of income through timber and fuelwood production, and also reducethe pressure on forests. Under the prevailing sub-optimum conditions in the region, shade trees are crucial in regulating the microclimate and ensuring coffee plantation sustainability and coffee quality. To encourage their adoption by coffee farmers, itis important to quantify the impact of these agroforestry systems on the environment and natural resources (preservation of biodiversity, soil and water quality conservation, carbon sequestration) and offer decision-support tools and incentives to ensuremaximum rewards for coffee quality and environmental services.
