Description of a new coffee tree-disease (Coffea arabica) caused by the fungus Alternaria alternata in Brazil

Necrotic spots of brown colour and yellowish aureole were found on leaves of coffee tree in the region of Garanhuns-PE in October 1999. The samples were observed in an optical microscope and monosporic isolates were obtained for identification and inoculation. The fungus was identified as A. alternata. Pathogenicity tests were performed through the spray of conidial suspensions (2.5 x 103 con.ml-1) or the deposition of agar discs containing fungal mycelial growth, on coffee seedlings. The symptoms were observed five days after inoculation and the fungus was re-isolated, fulfilling Koch's Postulates. This was the first report of the disease in South America.
