Insect pathogenic fungi in Costa Rica and Nicaragua with focus on Hyphomycetes in soil and the effect of management practices in coffee (Coffea arabica)

In this study, soil samples were collected from organically and conventionally managed coffee fields were different shade trees were used. The aim of this study was to compare the natural occurrence of insect pathogenic fungi in these production systems. Two locations, one dry zone in Masaya, Nicaragua and one wet zone in Turrialba, Costa Rica, were used as study fields. The occurrence of insect pathogenic fungi in the two management systems was compared by baiting soil samples with the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and by using the method of counting colony forming units (CFUs).
